Design Considerations
Ventilation is recommended for all installations in order to disperse moisture and excess heat, and is essential where insulation or coloured cladding is used.
The designer should aim to achieve an unrestricted vertical cavity of at least 25mm between the rear face of the cladding and the front face of the insulation or membrane. Angle vents (C061 & C065) are available to close off the base of the cavity visually, but still allow the passage of air for ventilation purposes.
If a starter batten is used it should be drilled (10mm) at regular intervals (max 1m) to allow a vertical flow of air.
If insulation is required it should be fitted between appropriately spaced horizontal battens, covered with a damp proof membrane, and vertical counter battens installed.
Vertically mounted cladding will require the initial installation of vertical counter battening to maintain adequate ventilation.

 Important Installation Notes
Battens should be of good quality softwood of minimum cross section 19 x 38 mm. However, 25 x 38 mm battens are recommended.
For horizontal cladding, main battens are fixed vertically.
Intermediate battens to be at maximum 600mm centres.
Additional battens are required at the base and the head as well as at reveals, openings and changes of direction.(Fig3)
All battens should be well secured with fixings appropriate to the type of substrate at not exceeding 600mm centres.
Irregularities in the substrate will be adversely reproduced in the cladding installation. Packing pieces should therefore be placed behind the battens where needed.
Any starter batten should be drilled for vertical ventilation, fixed at or above DPC level and checked for level (Fig1). At junctions with flat or lean-to roofs, consideration should be given to the installation of the necessary flashing.
